View Full Version : Laid-back RP?

Some of my fondest roleplaying memories come from the earliest PBPs I played in. These RPs were very relaxed in the way they operated. Posts were short and sweet, there was no rules system and no GM, players could join or leave as they wished with little disruption to the storyline, and characters developed naturally over time without lengthy backstories.

That's not to say that I don't enjoy narrative, rules-based roleplaying as seen in Iron Miracles, but I think that having a laid-back RP that everyone is free to join would not only be a lot of fun, but a great asset to our young forum. It would also be a good way to bring beginners into the world of PBP roleplaying.

Does the idea intrigue anyone else?

freeform roleplaying isnt really my thing but i could see it being a good way to attract members. especially if the environment was well developed.

i dont think i would participate, but i will contribute to any world-building that you would like to have before hand.

That was an very favored hobby of mine. But the problem was that with no orginization, people posted less. I never knew how that worked out, I think they were afraid of godmoding or somthething. If people know what they're getting into, freeforms can be the greatest thing evar. I'm in.

I think we've already discussed my opinion on this type of PBP. :)

As long as the players are somewhat mature and responsible, it shouldn't be hard to keep the game under control. (I sort-of speak from personal experience XD).

I think we've already discussed my opinion on this type of PBP. :) I'm not certain that what you're referring to is completely applicable, but sure.

Okay, so it looks like at least three of us would be intersted in a casual, freeform RP. Windygo, if you have any ideas in terms of setting/genre, why don't you start up a recruitment thread for the new RP? I'm too busy to take on another project at the moment. I would suggest keeping things loosely-defined in order to allow a wide array of character concepts (I know I've got a rather unique one in mind.)

I thought that this was the recruitment thread. Well, I'm willing to oversee things, but I think I need to get people to get more into the specifics of what they want to play.

Always the cynic, aren't we? -_- This would be the proposal thread, in which we kick around the idea of starting a new RP. It exists to better develop that idea and to determine how much interest there is in it. Ideally, a recruitment thread would take the idea, now more fleshed out, and present it in a clear way with more information. Players would sign up in a more official manner, and present character ideas.

My character concept is a tricorne-wearing spellcaster who fires arcane shells from his trusty flintlock; a revolution-era swashbuckling gunslinger-mage that could be dropped reasonably into any fantasy setting with at least 17th century technology. He'd probably be a carpe diem romantic who couldn't fit his autobiography on a thousand pages. (For a name I was thinking Monroe Leftwright.)

I could probably go for quite a range of settings without deviating from my concept. I would enjoy a game that was anime-inspired (though not too heavily) fantasy, but without ties to any specific time period, culture, or technology level (not strictly medieval, for example). Like I said, things are best loosely defined. We don't need to elaborate greatly on the history or anything, and a vague setting can allow for a number of character concepts. Something I was definately hoping to achieve by starting this sort of casual RP was a game that would be very easy for new members to come into at any time, so the setting shouldn't discourage this.

You should know by now how picky I am, Mr. Ethy-nol. ^_- Forgive me for being jumpy, though. I've only ran one RPG before, and the direction I ran it in was very far downwards. You kind of really suprised me with this, and I'm still not sure what to think.

Sounds like something close to the setting of FF-IX, etc. would work. Should I have a deep storyline in mind? The problem with the one I ran was that people were very reluctant to take any initative- they seemed to really crave a GM.

Actually, I really liked FFIX's setting, and that sounds like an excellent way to go.

That sounds akin to the sort of problem we had with Ashen Dreamer back on the Gate. It wouldn't be a bad idea to start with some kind of storyline in mind, but don't cling too closely to it. If somebody tries to break away, be willing to make a totally new plan. For this reason, you shouldn't plan things in much detail, but that's a good piece of advice even if you're playing GM.

After reviewing Ashen Dreamer, my idea of a freeform, I discovered, is different from what I thought we were talking about. I think I have even less experience now...

So in the end, all I would need would be a decent introduction?

Ashen Dreamer should not be used as an example of anything. In fact, let's forget I ever mentioned it.

I suppose the idea here isn't that different, but it would be nice if this one were . . . successful? fun? worthwhile? capable of keeping a devoted memberbase? Any of those things. Yeah.

Since I imagine there would be a great deal of player freedom involved, an introduction is the most valuable part of the process. Still, if you want it, this is your RP. Run things however you find best. I'm open.

Oh, well that narrows it down. Ok, well, no guaruntees of anything, but I'll give it a shot. *shiver*

I guess I don't know what you were looking for.

Think it over a bit more and create the recruitment thread when you're ready. If you need guidance, I can support you.
