As some of you know, (or not) I'm aspiring to being a game designer one day. My current project is on hold right now since we've not been able to make progress in the 3-4 years we've been working on it, So I've decided to work on something a little simpler.

It's a 1 player platformer/adventure game. It's part Metroid, part Final Fantasy and part Tomb Raider.

The main character is a dragon named Taliesin. For future reference:

Taliesin is a young dragon who is bent on finding the lost treasure trove of the ancient Dragon King, Odyne. The goal of the game is to find 14 rare artifacts hidden within the many caverns of the Daggerlance Mountains which are the keys to the seal Odyne put on his treasure.

Taliesin sets off and finds himself face to face with vicious monsters, impossible barriers and life-threatening traps. He will also find unlikely firends hidden within the caverns that can teach him how to reach the unreachable, and defeat the undefeatable.

You start off with only a simple run and jump. and a close range attack that does some damage, but there some abilities you can gain through the course of the game.

Such as:

-Crawl
-Roll!
-Swim!
-Resist Heat!
-Resist Cold!
-Use many different breath-based weapons
-Climb Walls!
-Double Jump!
-Hover!
-and as many others as I can think of!

He will also need to interact with various other creatures along his quest. Towns wil provide rest areas and save points as well as shops that you can exchange coins for useful items.

Here's a moch shot I made in photoshop:

This game is being made with a relatively obscure game making engine called The Games Factory 2. This will probably take a while, since I'm doing it alone XD

Here's the first completed sprite:

Here's a completed animation I've done for the game. the export cut a bit of it off, but it'll be whole in the game.

Exciting! (Although I'm pretty sure Metroid + Tomb Raider + Final Fantasy = Castelvania.)

Definitely let me know if there is anything I can do to help, even if it's just offering some criticism or encouragement (I'm good at both!). I'm seriously considering a future in game design myself, which shouldn't be difficult at all (or so I tell myself) with the Computer Science degree I'm working on.

Nice spriting, also. I've been looking recently at getting into pixel art, but I still haven't been able to grasp the mechanics of shading (one of the reasons I stopped drawing, once one of my favorite hobbies, many years back).

(BTW, this should really be in the Game Design sub-forum of the Video Gaming section, but I was planning on merging the Game Design and Programming forums sooner or later anyway, so...thanks?)

(And, for no other reason, here's another parenthetical!)

ah I didn't know there was a game design sub-forum there. XP

And, yeah you could argue the Castlevania route, but that's not a perfect desription, either. Metroid as in the playing style (explore, gain abilities, explore more) Final Fantasy as in having NPCs you can interact with and stuff and Tomb Raider because of the storyline XP

I don't sprite often and animate even less. So animating that sprite took alot of effort. almost 3 days of work. And I still need to shade it XD.

I've also started a CS degree, and after that I'm going to get a Game Design Degree. Hopefully that'll help me out later on XP
