A tall, slim man with straight, but unruly, brown hair. His high cheek bones, and defined jaw, frame his slightly hooked nose. His grey eyes have a distant sparkle, as if lost in thought, spectacles perched low on his nose. A bit of stubble, perfect teeth. He speaks with slightly broken sentences, obviously more concerned with whatever he is contemplating. He wears dark brown slacks, heavy boots, and a long, leather duster over a white oxford shirt. Gloves tucked in his belt and a pistol strapped to his thigh; he stands, dusting off a leather fedora with meticulous care.

Reserved and precise, Elie approaches problems cooly and logically. He tends to be slightly detached and is often found mumbling himself through complex theories while his friends converse around him. Bored by social gatherings and events, Elie tends to spend time alone in his workshop. In his past he embarked on many adventures and secretly wants to travel abroad once more. Being that he is so literal and analytical he tends to be slightly sarcastic and very distrustful of magic, which is largely unexplainable from a scientific stand point. On the opposite side of the spectrum, he is incredibly fascinated with psionics (even though he doesn't show any signs of having the gift himself).
As far back as his childhood, Dorian Williams has been fascinated with the industrial and the mechanical. An only child born into a middle class family, he spent many of his young days running through the alleys of the industrial district with his friends. At home he created small inventions from discarded bits of machinery that he salvaged. His father left when he was very young. His mother, of weak constitution, fell ill when Dorian was 16 and died the next year.

After burying his mother, he sold his house and all but his closest possessions and traveled the world. He attended lectures given by the most famous and progressive engineering scientists and began building a collection of books on the subject. At one lecture he asked a series of educated questions that sparked the interest of a another man in the audience. This man, Prof. Triston Fischer, pulled Dorian to the side after the lecture and asked him if he would like to discuss a proposal with him over lunch. Dorian agreed.

Fischer was the Professor of Engineering Technologies at the University of Greater Sciences and was assembling a team of progressive engineers to pursue a recent breakthrough. He asked Dorian if he would be interested in being part of the team, as Fischer's assisstant. He made it a point to say that the nature of the breakthrough was to be kept at utmost secrecy. Dorian agreed and they set out together from the cafe. Later that day Dorian and Fischer met with the rest of the team, which consisted of three other engineers/inventors. At this meeting they made their travel plans and divulged the outline of the breakthrough. They boarded a boat late that night and set out overseas to collect the components they needed. They visited the clockwork, steam-tech, and automata capitals of the world, as well as many other cities scattered across the world. Dorian learned much of the different cultures and their unique ways or overcoming problems in engineering design.

Fischer taught Dorian many things regarding engineering and other, less legitimate, activites. He learned how to shoot a gun, locate and deal with black market vendors, and get out of sticky situations concerning less than savory groups of people. When they finished acquiring the rest of the components they returned to Fischer's home city of ((metropolis name)) to begin experimentation and construction.

Dorian, who had been given only the outline of the breakthrough, finally began to see just what the engineers were working toward. A few years into construction, the team received a letter from one of the leading engineers in their ranks stating that he had been observed and harassed by a mysterious group obviously after specifics regarding their work. The next day they were informed that his decapitated body was found in his home, the head was never located.

The other two engineers soon met the same fate. The night that Fischer and Dorian heard about the final murder Dorian received a large parcel and a letter from Fischer. The parcel contained all of the notes and writings regarding the breakthrough and the mechanism they were constructing. As well as a large sum of money. The letter, written by Fischer, stated that the organization pursuing their work remains unidentified, but they seem to be magic users of some kind. Fischer, however, knew that he was next on their list. He also knew that Dorian still had a chance of escaping from them. The rest of the letter was instructions on how Dorian should disappear. The lab mysteriously burned to the ground soon after Dorian received the letter, whether it was Fischer or the organization remains unknown.

He did as Fischer instructed and lied low for a few year. Soon after re-emerging, Dorian Williams, now Elie Preston, applied for the job of Professor of Engineering Technologies (the seat was still open after the death of Prof. Fischer). He was given the job and became Prof. Elie Preston.

Since the letter from Fischer, Elie hasn't had any contact with the organization. He tucked the notes and plans away in a chest and hasn't payed them any real attention since Fischer's death. The nature of the mechanism still remains a mystery, the intricacies only known to Elie.
